What Does The Term "Heart" In The Scriptures Mean?

In the Bible, the word "heart" could refer to one's a) mind b) desires c) will d) attitude and e) conscience. It also refers to other non-physical internal activities of man. "For from within, out of the heart of men...(Mr 7:21)

 * It could refer to the mind:

Mr 2:8 But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, "Why do you reason about these things in your hearts?

Mt 15:19 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts...

* It could refer to one's desires:

Ro 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.

* It could refer to the will:

Ro 6:17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.

Obedience requires the will.

* It could refer to one's attitude:

Mr 7:21 "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 "thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.

* It could refer to the conscience:

1Jo 3:20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
