Repentance literally means a change of mind or a change of heart attitude.
It's a change of heart attitude towards God. From rejecting, ignoring or taking God lightly, the repentant sinner now takes Him seriously.
It's a change of heart attitude towards sin. From delighting in sin, the repentant sinner now hates and abhors sin.
It's a change of heart attitude towards self. From having high views and estimates of self, it now realizes and owns its spiritual bankruptcy and helplessness in saving oneself.
It's a change of heart attitude towards Christ. From relying on self and its efforts for salvation, the repentant sinner now turns to Christ and wholly relies and trusts on Him and what He did on the cross for salvation.
