Let me attempt to give a definition of true love here. And this, we can glean from the most well-known Bible verse of all:
Joh 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
You see, love is the willingness to give and sacrifice everything for the ultimate good of the one being loved. By good, I mean that which is truly good, untainted by something that is harmful and sinful, good which passes the standards of God.
By ultimate good, I mean this--- sometimes we allow something that is uneasy and oftentimes painful to our loved one to bring about in the end his or her ultimate good.
God allows trials and sufferings to come into the life of His beloved in order to conform him or her to the image of His Son. We can be sure though that the sufferings are always calibrated and never unnecessary. There is something that we can learn in our pain that we could never learn in comfort and ease.
